Away-Ink: Blame not the cat
There was to be an Intro. for the learning made this week and with a late start. Excused by the answer took a bit to get. This should sum up the use of riddles in a good way. The Sphinx guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes, demanding that all travelers answer the riddle correctly before they could pass. The legendary question is: “Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed, two-footed, and three-footed?” The answer, of course, is “man”, crawling on all fours as a baby, walking on two feet as an adult, and using a walking stick in old age. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, riddles continued to be a popular form of entertainment and intellectual exercise.
They were often used to convey moral lessons, tell stories, and pass on cultural traditions. For example, medieval scholars would hide double meanings in written words, requiring interpreters to uncover the deeper significance. In modern times, riddles have evolved to include a wide range of themes, styles, and levels of difficulty. They can be found in literature, folklore, and popular culture, from classic examples like Mad Hatter’s riddle (“Why is a raven like a writing desk?”) to contemporary puzzles and brain teasers.
