Away-ink:48th To-Boga

In the last part of the rabbit hole, the name of Thomas Nast will come up again as it already appeared before in the learning introduction. A twisting of the history of comics leads to two names the former and Boss Tweed, born William Magar Tweed, was a notorious American politician dominated New York City’s politics during the late 19th century. The leader of the “Tweed Ring,” a corrupt political machine that controlled city government and stole millions of dollars from taxpayers. Born in 1823, Tweed grew up in a working-class family and developed a talent for politics at an early age. Became a volunteer firefighter, school commissioner, and street commissioner, making connections and building alliances that would serve well in future political career. In the 1850s, Tweed joined Tammany Hall, a powerful Democratic political organization in New York City. Quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure in the organization and eventually its leader. Tweed’s charisma, cunning, and ability to distribute patronage and favors made him a beloved figure among of the constituents. As leader of the Tweed Ring, Tweed, and his cronies systematically plundered New York City’s coffers, embezzling an estimated $30 million to $200 million (approximately $3.5 billion to $20 billion in today’s dollars). Manipulated contracts, inflated bills, and stolen funds meant for public projects, including the construction of the Tweed Courthouse, which cost taxpayers a staggering $12 million (approximately $200 million today).

In 1871, The New York Times and Harper’s Weekly exposed the Tweed Ring’s corruption through investigative reporting and political cartoons by Thomas Nast. Tweed was arrested and charged with 102 separate crimes, including embezzlement and fraud. After a lengthy trial, he was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Despite the corrupt activities, Tweed’s legacy has been complex and multifaceted. Played a significant role in shaping modern New York City, overseeing the construction of infrastructure projects, including the city’s courthouse and street grid. His political machine also helped to establish New York City as a major urban center, attracting immigrants and businesses. In Popular Culture and literature, film, and television, including in works by Upton Sinclair, Stephen Crane, and Martin Scorsese. This history has served as a cautionary tale about the dangers of political corruption and the importance of accountability in government.
